Tired of artificial food coloring? Why not try coloring your eggs with herbs, veggies, fruits and spices?
Naturally coloring eggs the old fashion way is easy, but it does take a little more time. The amount of time your egg spends in the dye will add to it’s uniqueness and give you a beautiful variety of colors. Plus naturally dyed eggs look great in a basket on your counter.
Here are some of the herbs, veggies, fruits and spices that will dye your eggs naturally:
- Light Yellow Eggs – Saffron
- Dark Yellow Eggs – Turmeric
- Orange Eggs – Yellow Onion Skins
- Light Blue Eggs – Red cabbage
- Dark Blue Eggs – Blueberry
- Green Eggs- Parsley
- Light Green Eggs – Spinach
- Pink or Red Eggs – Beets
- Purple Eggs – Red Wine
- Brown Eggs – Coffee grounds or 4 black tea bags.
Instructions for Veggies or Herbs:
- Add 2-3 cups of herb, veggie, fruit, or spice to a stainless steel pot with 2 cups of water and cover.
- Bring water to a boil and simmer for around 30-45 minutes.
- Strain out all of the veggie or herbs.
- Add 1-2 Tbsp of white vinegar and 1 tsp of salt to dye.
- Let dye sit until it is room temperature before dipping eggs.
Instructions to Dye the Egg:
Place your egg in a tall glass or jar; mason jars are great for this. Pour the dye over your eggs and completely cover them. Allow your egg to sit for at least a minimum of one hour. The longer your egg sits, the more vibrant the egg color. A white egg will absorb the dye faster.
