Tis the season for colds, coughs and stuffed up noses. A homemade herbal vapor rub is invaluable for soothing the coughing and congestion that can interfere with a good nights sleep at our house.
Here is the quick and simple recipe to make a homemade herbal vapor rub:
- 8 OZ of Olive Oil
- 2 OZ Beeswax
- (5) 2 OZ tins
- 20 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil (4 drops for children)
- 20 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (4 drops for children
- 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (Omit for children)
- 10 drops Cinnamon or Clove essential Oil (Omit for children)
- Labels
In a double boiler I heat the olive oil and beeswax until the beeswax is fully melted. If you do not have a double boiler you can use a glass bowl in a pan of water. As soon as all is melted it comes off of the heat. I do not want to burn the oils.
Next add your drops of Eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary and/or cinnamon/clove essential oils. I mix thoroughly and then pour into my 2 oz tins. Let it sit overnight to harden and then add your label.
If you want to make this for a small child or infants I suggest substituting the Peppermint oil for 4 drops of Lavender essential oil. Lavender is very mild for children as well as soothing.
With colds and congestions come chapped lips. I am adding the link to my homemade lip balm here as well.
